AUCKLAND IO SIG | Transformational Professional Development: A Challenge

Join our virtual session with Iain McCormick for a discussion of how Transformational Learning can be applied in professional development.

As professionals supporting people’s development, we know a great deal about learning but do not typically apply this knowledge to our own continuous professional development.

Professional development usually involves webinar and classroom style presentations with discussions. An alternative approach is the Transformational Learning model of Mezirow. This involves a process of changing the frame of reference, habitual ways of thinking or point of view - it includes changing how we see ourselves, what we believe and how we live our lives. It has the following steps:

_ A disorienting dilemma – a challenge to the learner’s thoughts or beliefs - a “light bulb” moment

_ Self-examination – the learner examines their beliefs and understandings,

_ Critically evaluates assumptions - learners understand that some past assumptions were incorrect, so can then move to accept beliefs

_ Planning new actions – having opened up to new beliefs learners develop a strategy to learn new ideas

_ Try new behaviours, think new thoughts, gaining knowledge and skills - the learner puts in the extra effort to embrace the transformational learning which is both real and lasting

_ Exploring new roles - trying out new skills, actions and tactics are critical - not just acquiring new information but actively experiencing the change and developing self-efficacy - the learner then knows they can change and use their new skills with confidence.

The event presents practical examples of how Transformational Learning can be applied in professional development.
