This webinar will allow students studying human resources or those looking to get started in their HR career to gain insight and to feel a little less overwhelmed in taking those important next steps.

Panelists will discuss:

  • What makes candidates hireable/desirable to HR recruiters or organisations
  • Tips on helping you stand out

There will also be time for questions and answers.

Panel Speakers

Laura Warren (HR person of the year 2023 award winner)

Laura is a People & Culture Director at Te Pūkenga and also holds the national IR/ER portfolio of Te Pūkenga. Laura is an HR Generalist, who has held progressively more senior roles across a range of sectors, and for the past 15 years has worked in tertiary education both in Australia and New Zealand. Laura’s expertise and passions are in employment relations, change leadership, and delivering exceptional HR service. Laura is an Otago university graduate and was the Otago branch president for HRNZ from 2020-2022. She was a finalist in the Branch of the Year category of the HRNZ awards in 2021 and 2023, and was named Branch of the Year in 2022. At the 2023 HRNZ Awards, Laura won the Leadership Award and HR Person of the Year award.

Amy Clarke (chartered member of HRNZ)

Amy is the Manager, Professional Standards and Development at HRNZ.

Amy joined HRNZ in July 2021 and has a broad background in generalist HR across the private and public sector. At the 2021 NZ HR Awards, Amy was a finalist for the HR Generalist of the year category, Winner of the Leadership Award and named HR Person of the Year for 2020. Amy has a passion for diversity and inclusion and supporting the LGBTTQI+ community.

In her role, Amy oversees HRNZ’s professional standards and development framework and ensures we deliver good quality content to our members through all our channels.

Madeline Pithkethley (newly accredited emerging HR professional)

Maddy is an HR Advisor at Hamilton City Council and an Emerging Professional Member at HRNZ.

Maddy graduated from Waikato University in 2018 with a Bachelor of Social Science majoring in Human Resource Management and has worked in various HR roles within the supermarket industry and private sector before joining Hamilton City Council in August 2021.

In her current role, Maddy works within the HR Business Support Team, on a day-to-day basis task might include, providing guidance to managers and employees on HR processes, providing advice on employment law, advising on policies, and handling employee relations issues. Maddy is passionate about working collaboratively with colleagues to make a positive difference in the lives of employees and support the organisations’ goal to be an employer of choice.

Elena Calvert (recruitment manager , HRNZ national vice president + chartered member of HRNZ)

Elena is a proud alumni of the University of Otago. After graduating with her management degree she joined Deloitte Dunedin as a graduate consultant and worked with local and national clients providing HR consulting services for almost 8 years. After a 2-year run as an HR Manager with Mitre 10 Mega in Dunedin, she joined the University of Otago as the Recruitment Manager. Elena is passionate about all aspects of HR and making a difference to people working lives by creating environment they can thrive in. HR professionals are super heros, just without capes!

Since early in her career Elena has been involved with HRNZ, as a committee member, branch President and more recently a board member and National Vice President.
