It is so tricky to calculate holidays and leave entitlements that more than 700,000 employees in New Zealand have been underpaid. This is set to change since the Holidays Act Taskforce released its final report.

The New Zealand Government has accepted the Taskforce’s recommendations, which clarifies how to calculate entitlements for staff holidays and leave.

Important changes include:

  • New clear rules and definitions for determining, calculating and paying leave entitlements.
  • Greater entitlements for staff – such as starting sick leave from the first day of employment.
  • Calculating correct entitlements to avoid penalties for payroll blunders.
