Please join us for an IO Psychology event on Strategic thinking competence top to bottom – what, how and why?

Strategic thinking is an essential skill at all levels if we are to move organisations deliberately towards their goals in an increasingly complex and unpredictable world. At the top, strategic thinking is important for designing successful strategies that create long term value and organisational performance. Cascading down through the organisation, strategic thinking is important for the day to day business of moving an organisation towards realising its strategy – generating, understanding and applying strategic direction, solving complex problems, finding root-cause long-term solutions, coming up with novel and creative ideas, and breaking out of silos and the trap of status quo thinking. Strategic thinking is something that comes naturally to some, but it can be taught, practiced and learned as well.

This presentation will:

  • explore what strategic thinking is and why it can be difficult to do,
  • introduce a model of strategic thinking based on psychology, management, and cognitive science literature,
  • look briefly at how it can be measured,
  • explore some ideas about how to teach it, and
  • start the conversation about why HR functions and organisations need to develop strategic thinking as an individual and organisational capability.

About our Presenter

Nina Field is an organisational psychologist who is fascinated by what makes people and organisations tick and has a particular interest in the interplay of strategy, culture and leadership. After working with psychometrics and assessment and selection in the private sector, Nina joined the Navy and enjoyed a challenging and varied 11 year career. She held psychology as well as leadership and management roles across Navy, Army and Defence, culminating in the Head of Navy Psychology role from 2016. In 2018 she left the Navy to focus on being a mum and has been using her child-free moments to pursue an interest in what psychology has to say about strategic thinking and how to develop it in individuals and organisations.
