A hands-on introductory course where you will explore a real problem and go through the design process of testing concepts in your work

Participants will work through multiple phases of the design process, from exploration research with real people; to idea generation; and onto experimentation, prototyping and testing of concepts.

Pre-work: Pre-work to be utilised on the 2 consecutive course days for each workshop will prepared by ThinkPlace and distributed to participants with instructions approximately 2 weeks prior to the course start date.

Day 1: Introduction and problem exploration

  • Introduce and provide an overview of human centred design, including the process and principles behind it, and the characteristics of how we'll work
  • Explore the problem we want to solve
  • Set our intent and define understanding how we'll know if we've been successful.
  • Discuss and explore pre-work - the short empathy interviews in the pre-work and discover more about the problem from other people’s perspectives.

Homework (Day 1 afternoon): Exploration and discovery

Conduct short empathy-style interviews with colleagues in the workplace. The information gathered will help to inform Day 2, allowing participants to draw insights and generate ideas. Two interviews will need to be set up with your colleagues at the end of Day 1 – ThinkPlace will provide instructions 2 weeks before the course.

Day 2: Synthesis, idea generation, prototyping, complex systems and complex problems

  • Unpack and synthesise their findings from the exploratory interviews
  • Follow a structured idea generation and concept development process to enrich and refine ideas.
  • Choose a concept to prototype at a low level of fidelity, in a way that can be taken back into the participant's organisation and then tested and refined with others. Learn about safe to fail experiments.
  • Learning how to work in complex systems and how to influence change with multi-point interventions.

About the Presenter – Martin Grant

Martin sees a bright future for New Zealand. A future where commercial and social organisations use their scarce resources wisely; a future where innovation efforts are de-risked by decisions that are truly customer centric and system focussed. With more than 30 years’ experience in the design of communications, brands, retail spaces, digital products and services in B2C and B2B categories, Martin is well-placed to understand complex systems.

Martin’s recent work includes bringing a system-based approach to the transformation of the building and construction industry, helping design services and train service designers, prioritising technology product roadmaps based on customer insight and helping a dairy co-op reconnect with its shareholders. He has also helped numerous export companies get bigger and better faster through work with NZTE.

Martin has a degree in business management with a major in marketing. He is a De Bono Lateral Thinking instructor. Martin attributes part of his success to being a pragmatic life-long learner and explorer in the areas of innovation, design and systems thinking. He has now turned his attention to democratising human centred complex system design.

An appropriate substitute participant is welcome any time before the course starts. Please let us know the replacement's name. If you have booked on a member price and a non member is to attend in your place you will be invoiced for the difference in price.

A refund of fees will be made if a cancellation is received in writing at least 10 working days prior to the commencement of the course.

Regrettably, no refunds can be made for cancellations received after this date and you are liable for the full cost of attendance at the course.
