WAIKATO BRANCH: RESCHEDULED Domestic Violence Workshop with Shine
- Duration: 7 hours
- Region: Waikato
- Venue: The Link
Please join us for a First Responder Intensive Group Training (Limited to 20 people)
First responders’ are the staff within an organisation designated as the people to contact if staff are experiencing domestic violence and want support in the workplace from their employer. Training is critical to help ‘first responders’ be prepared to respond safely and effectively to domestic violence in the workplace, and help them understand their professional boundaries.
This training will prepare you to:
1. Understand better the complex dynamics and effects of domestic violence and the impact that it has upon employees
2. Recognise the signs of domestic violence and the many reasons and difficulties that may stop someone from leaving an abusive partner
3. Understand the boundaries of the role of a First Responder
4. Practice responding using the Six Step Response to Staff Domestic Abuse Disclosures, including knowing when to liaise with an employee’s Manager
5. Know how to access the help-seeking pathways for employees experiencing domestic violence
6. Understand broadly how an organisation can provide accountability and support for change for employees who perpetrate domestic violence
Shine (Safer Homes in New Zealand Everyday) is a specialist domestic violence charity established in 1990. Shine provides a range of specialist domestic violence services, all with the primary aim of supporting adults and children experiencing domestic violence to become safe. These include a range of services for adults and children harmed by domestic violence, as well as a non-violence programme for men who’ve perpetrated domestic violence. We also provide a range of training and education services alongside our DVFREE workplace programme. The workshop is facilitated by Margaret Fitzgibbon a Shine DVFREE Coordinator and Senior Trainer. Her various roles have involved the building of capacity of families; programme management and community development, and community consultation and integration. Throughout these roles she has worked directly with families experiencing domestic violence. She recognises that education is a vital part of a multi-faceted community approach to create violence-free communities.
