About the role 

As the Senior Employee Relations Advisor, you will support the development and implementation of Hato Hone St John's national employee relations strategy and contribute to maintaining close working relationships with all functional areas of the organisation.  The role has two key focuses - one is to provide specialist ER and legal advice and act as an escalation point for our HR Advisory team in complex matters to manage any legal risks to Hato Hone St John.  The second, is to support the Head of Employee Relations with industrial relations by contributing to the implementation of industrial relations programme of work and maintaining constructive union engagement through collaborative relationships.  You will also have the opportunity to work on a range of projects across the wider human resources function.

This role can be based in either Auckland or Christchurch.

About you 

To be successful in this role, you will have: 

  • Five years' plus post qualification experience as an employment lawyer and/or working in an employment/industrial relations role in a highly unionised complex organisation, where you have contributed to ER strategy
  • An in-depth understanding of employment legislation and its application in an operational environment
  • The ability to provide advice that strikes a balance between minimising legal and reputational risk with an understanding of what's the "right" thing to do.
  • Legal experience in employment law/industrial law, where you have attended mediations and ERA hearings and briefed external legal advisors
  • Knowledge and appreciation of the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and its application for
    Hato Hone St John in the community and health-care environments, with appreciation of New Zealand's diversity and a commitment to supporting the development of multicultural communities across New Zealand
