The Salvation Army Te Ope Whakaora is a world-wide evangelical Christian church and human service provider that assists over 140,000 New Zealanders every year providing a wide range of community services, such as food banks, family stores, early childhood centres, hostels, addiction treatment centres and a hospice.
The purpose of the HR function is to enable the Territory (New Zealand, Fiji, Tonga and Samoa) to recruit, resource, pay and support appropriate staff to fulfil the mission of The Salvation Army – “caring for people, transforming lives and reforming society”.
We are seeking a motivated individual to join our dynamic HR team, where you will have the opportunity to have significant input and influence into the work we do.
The team of six is small in relation to the size of the organisation - we provide a wide range of operational and strategic HR support to around 2000 employees and 300 Salvation Army Officers across over 150 locations nationwide. Some of the services The Salvation Army provides are addictions, reintegration, family tracing, community services and many more.
Reporting to the HR Manager, the Senior HR Advisor is responsible for both HR generalist advice and services as well as providing advice on a range of ER topics. We value the importance of providing a prompt and quality service to our managers. We have built good working relationships and trust with our managers and work well together to work through HR/ER issues. The successful candidate will be relational and solutions focused. Being a team player is a must, as you will be joining a supportive and close knit team who work in an open plan environment and work together to achieve desired results.
It is an exciting time to join our team. In addition to ER work, we also have a number of proactive projects on the go. In particular, our HR team is at the start of a journey to implement The Salvation Army’s Strategic Mission Plan for Māori and we are committed to embedding this within our HR policies and practice. Our current recruitment and engagement projects provide significant scope in this area.
Knowledge of Te Tiriti o Waitangi principles, bi-culturalism and experience in embedding these principles within HR policy and practice will be advantageous. This will enable you to provide advice to managers and develop policies that help us to attract Māori and Pasifika staff and increase Māori participation and engagement in our workforce.
Empathetic, consultative and yet firm in your approach, you will know your craft well and will possess a strong understanding of relevant HR legislation and its practical implications. This is a pivotal role within a busy and diverse environment, which will provide the opportunity to work with a wide variety of interesting, talented and highly committed professionals.
Ideally you will have studied HR related papers within your degree qualification and have gained HR/ER related work experience and are keen to develop both your HR/ER advisory and project experience while journeying with us as we embrace and embed principles of biculturalism and inclusiveness.
- A track record of excellence in HR with a strong ER focus in an advisory role (3-5 years)
- Sound working knowledge of everything HR, with the confidence and ability to deliver advice and guidance at all levels of the organisation
- A collaborative approach with exceptional relationship management skills with both internal and external stakeholders
- Team player
- Superior communication, problem solving, negotiation and conflict resolution capabilities
- High level of initiative with effective planning, project management and organisational abilities
- Understanding and empathy towards the mission and values of the Salvation Army
In return the successful candidate will be joining a supportive HR team with a relaxed approach, but who work hard to get results. Additionally, you will be joining an organisation which is empathetic and caring for each other as well as the community.
If this sounds like you, and you would like to join an iconic organisation with a passion for making a real difference to those in need, please apply.
