KAITIAKITANGA EDUCATION

What have you been doing to action the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at work, at school, or at home? Please specify which SDGs these actions connect to?

I am a teacher and therefore SDG 4 is central to my vocation. However, I also aim to explore the full range of SDGs in my teaching! For example, in the image below you can see one of my students working on a poster to show how their personal values reflect the concept of Kaitiakitanga or guardianship. Each student is encouraged to explore the full range of SDGs and think about how their values connect with the goals. For many of my students, SDGs 13, 14 & 15 are forefront in their minds. This links strongly to the concept of Kaitiakitanga as we consider how we can act as guardians for our land and waterways, and how climate action can have a positive impact on our planet. It is impossible to consider any single SDG in isolation and this is never more prevalent than when considering SDG 4. Quality Education is the key to creating empowered citizens who can action the goals as we move into the future!

  • SDG 4: Quality education
  • SDG 13: Climate action
  • SDG 14: Life below water
  • SDG 15: Life on land
