This Specialist Remuneration advisor role is part of the Promotions and Remuneration team in Human Resources at Ōtākou Whakaihu Waka. 

The team provides advice and support for remuneration and benefits, employee agreements and policies, and academic career pathways. It includes responsibility for management of salary criteria, academic promotions and review processes, job evaluation, oversight and advice on employment conditions and related policies.

The role/Te mahi

As part of a small team, the Specialist Remuneration will focus on the employee total rewards functions. 

Key tasks of this role also include:

  • Drawing on both internal and external sources to gather, analyse and report on remuneration within the University’s remuneration strategy.
  • Providing data for remuneration surveys and utilising those reports to benchmark and advise on the University’s alignment within the tertiary sector and other markets.
  • Reviewing and reporting on employee benefits, uptake, and market alignment.
  • Where appropriate, providing information for policy reviews, career pathways, remuneration structures, and employment negotiations.
  • Ensuring job evaluation processes and rules are followed consistently and equitably across the University.
  • Providing analysis of evaluation outcomes, their alignment with job description design and salaries.
  • Supporting and facilitating training and development initiatives.
  • Supporting initiatives to retain, grow and support Māori and Pacific staff. including recruitment and recognition for career development programmes.
  • Working in collaboration with the manager and team members to achieve the unit’s overall objectives.
  • Working alongside the HR Business Analyst.

Your skills and experience/Kā pūkeka me kā wheako

You will have specialist experience in one or more of the following areas; remuneration and total rewards, analysis and policy writing, job design and evaluation, payroll and HRM systems, preferably in the tertiary or public sector. 

A critical thinker, you will have an analytical mindset, enjoy gathering insights and be able to interpret information quickly, in order to provide recommendations, prepare briefs and present at management level. 

You will also have:

  • A tertiary level qualification in a related discipline or recognised qualification(s) appropriate to the role.
  • An understanding of HR, Payroll and ER processes and connection with reward.
  • Demonstrated skills in critical thinking, problem-solving, priority setting and meeting deadlines.
  • Ability to interact effectively and professionally with internal and external stakeholders at all levels.
  • Cultural acumen and awareness, including a demonstrated commitment to Tiriti o Waitangi partnerships.
  • Experience working with HRIS, job evaluation, payroll systems, and data visualisation tools such as PowerBi.
  • A high level of discretion in using confidential information.
  • The ability to build strong collaborative working relationships. 

An understanding of the New Zealand higher education sector would be advantageous and ideally you will have completed Job Evaluation training.

This is a permanent, full time (37.5 hours) position, based in Ōtepoti, Dunedin.

The appointments range for this role is $75,380 to $84,656. Top of range is $94,075.
