Francesca Dalli-Niven APHRNZ

What led you to a career in HR/ the position that you are in currently?  

I have always been passionate about people. I naturally grew into a career in HR through a keenness to ensure fair and just treatment for all. Having a varied early career at professional registration bodies, and a stint at a Union I came to my current organisation (Hōhepa Hawke’s Bay) at the tail end of Covid in the Healthcare Recruitment space – certainly challenging but highly rewarding time!

What do you love about working in HR? 

The variety! I think any HR practitioner you speak to will talk about the variety of the day. We are asked to be flexible and have many tools in our toolbox. In my role as Recruitment and HR Manager I get to support employees and managers to turn those difficult experiences/conversations into positive learning ones. The community that you join as an HR practitioner is also another reason. You have many people around you to support your learning and development – I am lucky enough to have a HRNZ Mentor and my Line Manager who I work closely with to support my development – I really value being able to test different perspectives on the issues HR practitioners face day to day.

What is an achievement so far in your career that you are proud of?   

Aside from being awarded my EPMHRNZ, my organisation (Hōhepa Hawke’s Bay) has recently been awarded the good employer award by MBIE for our work in Diversity and Inclusion in the workplace. Working alongside our team to achieve this was a privilege, and we can only continue to grow from here.

What are your thoughts on the Emerging Professional Member process?   

A great and simple process – I love the chance to be able to reflect on my practice!

Do you plan to now work towards becoming a Chartered Member?   

Definitely, the professional accreditation process allows you to reflect on your practice, what you are doing and how you can grow. I see becoming a chartered member as the next natural step.

What are your next steps in terms of your career?   

To continue to learn and develop in my current role, and consolidate my knowledge. I am currently working towards my Masters in HR and would eventually like to move into a HR Leadership position.
