Rita Hababa APHRNZ

What led you to a career in HR/ the position that you are in currently?

The short answer would be that I love talking to people, no matter who you are and what you do, I will chat your ear off. I also understand the impact you can have in HR, you can really make a difference, not only in people’s careers but in their lives. I remember seeing somewhere that great companies are made of great people, this primarily depends on HR to get people onboard which I think is amazing. I’m currently an HR Coordinator but I’ve been given an amazing opportunity to be exposed to a variety of different things that I probably wouldn’t have been able to do somewhere else in this position. I can’t wait to grow and see what the future holds for me.

What do you love about working in HR?

What I love about working in HR is definitely interacting with different people across the business. I know almost every single person in the Construction side of the business and starting to know many more people across Fulton Hogan as a whole. I also love that the profession is consistently changing to make things better. Whether this is developing new strategies with top level managers or working on effective career plans for our employees, it’s great to be given the opportunity to support the business reach its objectives.

What is an achievement so far in your career that you are proud of?

I’ve been in the field for less than 2 years now and apart from my degree that I’ve recently finished, I have to say, becoming an Emerging Professional Member of HRNZ has to be the highlight of my career so far.

What are your thoughts on the Emerging Professional Member process?

I definitely enjoyed the Emerging Professional Membership process. A lot of the time you tend to forget what you’ve done and the impact you’ve made when working in such a fast-paced environment. This gave me the opportunity to sit down and analyse what I’ve done and what I did to get to where I am today.

Do you plan to now work towards becoming a Chartered Member?

Yes! I’m already collecting my information so that I’m ready to apply for the Chartered Member in the future.

What are your next steps in terms of your career?

My next steps are definitely to move into an HR Advisor position. I have an abundance of knowledge in all HR competencies, I just need to start applying it. I’m very excited to advance in my career and continue helping and supporting people everyday.
