What led you to a career in HR/ the position that you are in currently?

I am a driven and hardworking individual. I graduated from university as a Valedictorian by the age of 20 and landed a job at a multinational bank as a Management Trainee. Upon completing the 2-year fast track program and working on different projects across the bank, I was scouted by the HR Director and she trusted me to be part of the HR Strategic & PMO team. Due to the rising need, I was reassigned to Learning & Development, managing a high-value digital learning transition project. After 4 years in the banking industry, I moved overseas. I started as Customer Experience Specialist, but within 6 months, I was trusted to carry out managerial duties, such as mentoring new hires, facilitating training and handling escalations. Long story short, the Associate Director of Talent Management recruited me to join her team, initially as Talent Management Specialist (intern) and after a few months as a Project Coordinator. To follow my husband, I moved to New Zealand and just started my career here as an Associate Consultant.

What do you love about working in HR?

I am passionate about helping people to achieve their best potential. I have been in different fields of HR for around 4 years, from project office, learning & development, talent management and most recently recruitment - and I believe that I still have a lot to learn. There is a lot of room to grow and make a difference in HR.

What is an achievement so far in your career that you are proud of?

Being able to build good relationships and earn the trust of stakeholders, who come from different cultural backgrounds, phases of life and job levels. I believe that I have been achieving this through consistently delivering high results and communicating regularly to keep them updated. That said, I am still continuously improving my communication and stakeholder management skills.

What are your thoughts on the Emerging Professional Member process?

The process is easy and straightforward. I received my accreditation in less than 1 week after I applied.

Do you plan to now work towards becoming a Chartered Member?

Definitely! I will continue to learn and develop myself to earn my Chartered Member certification and contribute more to the HR field here in New Zealand.

What are your next steps in terms of your career?

Looking for a more challenging role where I can make full use of my skills and expertise while growing professionally. To support this, I will continue to find ways to learn, including from my HRNZ mentor to gain better insights on NZ employment legislations and HR practices.
