Hayley Begg APHRNZ

What led you to a career in HR/ the position that you are in currently?

I worked in a range of different part time roles through my high school years, I really loved working and all the people I would meet, from different walks of life and with different stories. Everyone was so unique and I quickly developed a keen interest in understanding what motivates and retains a workforce. While completing my degree, the balance between leveraging human resources for business success and being a responsible employer drove me to look further into HR. Although I got a bit distracted working in operational management roles during COVID, I was excited to join Hind Management/Sudima Hotels in mid-2023 as a People and Culture Advisor and return to an area of business I am so passionate about. I feel really inspired working in the hospitality industry, I hadn’t worked in the industry before this role but can’t see myself anywhere else now. It is exciting, challenging and gives me the same buzz as when I have worked in small business previously. There is always something to do, heaps to learn and the opportunities for growth are endless.

What do you love about working in HR?

I thrive in a fast-paced work environment, so the dynamic nature of HR suits me perfectly. Each day brings new opportunities to learn, and there is never a dull moment. The challenges mean I can constantly grow professionally, allowing me to view situations from different perspectives as I develop. I've had the privilege of meeting and working with incredible people in this field, and that has made me enjoy it even more. I enjoy finding solutions to tricky situations and guiding managers to reach the best outcomes for their teams, it’s really fulfilling watching teams grow and see staff reach milestones they didn’t think were possible.

What is an achievement so far in your career that you are proud of?

I am a finalist in our internal awards for Emerging Leader, this was based on nominations and I was so surprised and honoured to be named as a finalist.

What are your thoughts on the Accredited Professional Member process?

It’s easy to follow and understand. With the number of events such as Café Connect and online learning opportunities, it is achievable if you put your mind to it.

Do you plan to now work towards becoming a Chartered Member?

Absolutely, I have already started, and it is my next big goal.

What are your next steps in terms of your career?

I am excited to continue to learn in my current role and keep challenging myself. In future, I want to grow as a leader in the HR space, I aspire to transition into a more strategic HR role. I want to be involved in shaping high-level policies and strategies that align with the overall business goals and enhance employee engagement. I am working to grow my knowledge in the areas of AI and DEI and will continue to integrate these into my day to day. I have a strong interest in governance and feel that strategic HR professionals are often missing from the board space, I currently sit on a board for a trust in Christchurch and look forward to expanding in this area.
