What led you to a career in HR/ the position that you are in currently?

I have always been passionate about fairness, equality, and justice, a commitment that guided me through my academic journey, culminating in a Master's degree in Law. My internship at the South African Human Rights Commission was an incredibly rewarding experience that reinforced my dedication to these values. After practicing as an attorney, I discovered a deep interest in employment law, although I often encountered clients only after they had completed certain processes or when their matters had escalated to the legal system. To proactively address issues, I transitioned into an in-house legal role and eventually took on the leadership of the Industrial Relations function. This path allowed me to eventually work closely with people matters in the HR Business Partner space. I firmly believe that a growth mindset and a successful culture are built on a strong HR function, championed by leadership, and has a profound positive impact on the overall employee experience.

What do you love about working in HR?

I am deeply committed to infusing the world with goodness, but this goal takes on greater significance when it’s shared among others. Witnessing individuals thrive through coaching and development not only contributes to their personal success but also fosters business growth, creating a remarkable cycle of increased employment opportunities. I find fulfillment in the challenges presented by this dynamic field; people are complex and multifaceted, and forging strong connections across diverse backgrounds is no easy task. However, this ongoing effort is immensely rewarding, as it not only enhances the workplace atmosphere but also extends its benefits into the broader community.

Are there any specific highlights of your career that you wish to share?

There are many highlights involving challenging projects or complex high risk matters that I would have found incredibly satisfying. Generally, the more complicated, the more I would enjoy it.  A highlight is when you hear your own subtle influence being designed into processes that positively impacts the dignity of employees. This is testament to the very many conversations that HR practitioners have on a daily basis that can often be overlooked.

My leadership style has grown as a result of the great leaders that I have had the pleasure of working with. My days as a young candidate attorney through to my many different leaders at Toyota and McDonald’s came with exposure to strategists, pragmatism, empathy, vulnerability, a drive for continuous improvement and plain old street smarts. These leaders, along with the teams I have been part of, have been an absolute highlight in shaping my journey.
