Carolyn Burke CMHRNZ

What led you to a career in HR/ the position that you are in currently?
My career in HR started quite a while ago! I was managing a retail/events department for a winery and wanted to expand my management experience and apply it on a company-wide level. When I expressed interest in HR, the CEO at the time tried talking me out of it… but he gave me the opportunity as I was very motivated. The majority of my HR profession has been at the Senior Leadership level in privately-held family companies, which is a natural lead in for my current role as People and Culture Manager with Whittaker’s.
What do you love about working in HR?
Working in HR allows me to make a meaningful impact on both individuals and the organization as a whole. I love being part of people’s career journeys—whether it’s helping someone land their dream job, supporting their development, or creating programs that keep ownership safe and make the workplace an employer of choice. HR keeps me continuously learning. Every day brings unique challenges that require creative problem-solving and empathy. I enjoy collaborating across departments, driving organizational growth, and fostering a positive work culture where employees feel valued and empowered. I feel very fortunate to have met and worked with many diverse and talented people, along with working for very successful companies.
Are there any specific highlights of your career that you wish to share?
My HR career has been spent within companies that place a great deal of importance on quality products and their people-processes. I have been so fortunate to have worked for very well-known family brands who value HR as a partner within their business. Having worked in wine, beer, hospitality, manufacturing has provided me with a new level of appreciation for what it actually takes to get a product to market, and the people responsible for doing so.
