Deborah Mello CMHRNZ

What led you to a career in HR/ the position that you are in currently?

I have a psychology background, and very early on, I was drawn into organisational psychology, being fascinated by the science behind human psychology and the practical application of this in a business context.

Since then, I have held multiple roles in the people and culture space, in different countries, and I have been motivated by the challenge of enabling people and organisations to thrive.

What do you love about working in HR?

I love the impact you can have on helping a business to achieve its strategy, by creating a culture that enables people to be themselves and reach their full potential.

I really enjoy the complexity and breadth of opportunities you can get involved in, along with opportunities to influence key business decisions.

I also love that the work that we do is meaningful and contributes to the success of an organisation, its people, and even the country when it comes to representation and inclusivity.

Are there any specific highlights of your career that you wish to share?

I have had so many highlights throughout my career. From implementing global P&C initiatives and a strategic HR operating model, through to establishing P&C strategies that enable the organisational strategy and leading global teams.

However, what I most proud of is the growth of leaders and team members I have coached through the years. It’s incredibly rewarding to see individuals grow and achieve wonderful things, knowing that I’ve had a positive impact on their path to success.

What are your thoughts on Chartered Membership? How do you feel about being a Chartered Member?

It’s excellent to see the HR profession recognised through Chartered Membership. I believe it is a great capability pathway that recognises expertise and commitment with the field, along with providing validation of skills, knowledge, and the wider contribution in the HR community

What motivated you to work towards becoming a Chartered Member?

I have always been motivated by continuous learning and the opportunity to develop others. Becoming a Chartered Member is a commitment to my own professional journey and development, as well as to supporting the wider HR community to grow and develop.

What are your next steps in terms of your career now that you are a Chartered Member?

I’m excited to be taking up a new opportunity this year, leading a P&C function, and I am looking forward to the impact that my new team and I will make together. I also plan to get more involved with HRNZ and to continue to coach other HR professionals across NZ.
