What led you to a career in HR/ the position that you are in currently?

I always think that life isn't a straight road. Sometimes the path we start on isn't where we end up. I began my career as a Primary School teacher. While working as a teacher I continued to study at University and worked towards a qualification in Educational Psychology. I think that the most interesting thing about my studies is that the one thing I have continually called upon throughout my career is myability to read people, not jump to conclusions and to look for other explanations for behaviours/ attitudes. From teaching I went into the corporate world where I became a Learning & Development champion spending 11 years promoting and working with Apple technology. Life was a bit varied after this with a balance of family life, L&D, Corporate coaching, HR and most importantly working in roles with people. So after a zip zag of roles, I have ended up in a career I hadn't heard of when I first trained - it didn't exist when I started out and it certainly wasn't a qualification!

What do you love about working in HR?

He tangata, he tangata, he tangata! There is no better job than getting to do what I love and work with people. I love the variety, solving problems, calling on my commercial acumen, building culture but none of this is possible without the people. Yes I also love talking, hearing about what people have been up to and their lives but to have a job where you support people and are their champion has to be the best job in the world.

Are there any specific highlights of your career that you wish to share?

I’m a kiwi and asking a kiwi to share highlights is not easy as I have been brought up to not brag or show off. If you ask what I’m proud of – then I can answer. I’m proud of making a difference for the people I have worked with – whether it’s the children I taught (who are now adults!), the teams I have worked alongside or the people who lean on me when they need support. I’m proud to have travelled during my time working with Apple and present to large crowds in New Zealand and overseas, my family and the qualifications along the way that have helped me to help others.

What are your thoughts on Chartered Membership? How do you feel about being a Chartered Member?

I’m really excited to become a Charter Member. When I first studied there were five degrees at university and none of them were in HR. I have years of experience but no qualification in HR as it wasn’t an option, so now with over 20 years working it’s amazing to be recognised for the work that I do and validated as having the knowledge I have to a required level. Thanks so much HRNZ for giving me the opportunity to participate.

What motivated you to work towards becoming a Chartered Member?

A qualification, recognition and being part of a group that have the same goals and outcomes. To belong and participate in a group that are here to support all people and champion for them.

What are your next steps in terms of your career now that you are a Chartered Member?

I’m really excited to be an HR Director and to have had other senior HR roles. Having the Chartered Membership for me wasn’t about progressing my career but more about affirmation for my work over the years. If I can give back to others, support others on their HR journeys then I’d love to do that.  For now, I love my role so there’s no next steps for now!
