What led you to a career in HR/ the position that you are in currently?
I started my degree at Victoria University doing IT & Tourism as I thought that’s what I wanted to do. At some point I found the Human Resources papers and as they say the rest is history! I’ve just moved from the Ministry of Social Development where I was Team Leader, HR Advisory to Whanau Awhina Plunket as HR Shared Services Team Leader and am thrilled to being back in a smaller organisation that is for purpose!
What do you love about working in HR?
I love being able to help both managers and employees with difficult situations and getting the best outcome for everyone. I really enjoy helping people develop their potential and finding their niche.
Are there any specific highlights of your career that you wish to share?
I really loved my role in London at Marriott Hotels, it was where I really cut my teeth and got to work with a truly global workforce. I met, worked with and helped some great people. Another highlight was my role at KiwiRail, particularly working with the Interislander crews. Having the stunning Marlborough Sounds as my 'office' was an incredible perk of the job!"
What are your thoughts on Chartered Membership? How do you feel about being a Chartered Member?
Becoming a Chartered Member aligns with my belief that HR is a crucial profession deserving greater recognition. I'm immensely proud of this achievement and am actively encouraging my colleagues to embark on this journey. It's rewarding to see some of them already becoming accredited members.
What are your next steps in terms of your career now that you are a Chartered Member?
Having recently joined the GirlGuiding New Zealand board and its HR subcommittee, I'm currently focusing on honing my governance skills. This new challenge complements my HR expertise and opens up exciting avenues for professional growth.
