What led you to a career in HR/ the position that you are in currently?
My journey into HR was somewhat unplanned, much like many others in the field. At 18, I began my career as an Operational Administrator (Writer) in the New Zealand Navy, a role that involved supporting various functions such as payroll, personnel performance, and management. After nearly 12 years in the Navy, I left not fully realising that the work I had been doing was essentially HR.
Following my time in the military, I continued in the HR field and have since gained experience working in a variety of organisations, ranging from blue and white-collar industries to both private and local government sectors. Each role has offered unique leadership opportunities and a wealth of insights, allowing me to gain diverse perspectives on the challenges and dynamics that can arise within different organisations.
What do you love about working in HR?
What I love most about working in HR is the incredible variety it offers and the many opportunities for growth and impact. HR covers so many areas, each contributing to the success of an organisation. Over the years, my interests within HR have evolved. When I first started, I enjoyed the problem-solving aspect of payroll, then I became intrigued by the complexities of employee relations. Now, I’m particularly interested in organisational psychology and the importance of leadership within organisations.
Ultimately, what I find most rewarding is working alongside organisational leaders to help them bring out the best in their people. As an HR expert, I value the ability to influence and ensure that an organisation’s people are not only cared for but are also thriving.
Are there any specific highlights of your career that you wish to share?
Throughout my career, I’ve experienced many wins and faced numerous challenges, making it difficult to pinpoint just one specific highlight. I’ve had a range of great experiences and successes that have shaped my journey. On a personal note, one key achievement was earning my Bachelor of Applied Management with a major in Human Resources. This was a significant milestone for me, as it validated my academic knowledge and complemented the years of hands-on experience I had gained.
If I had to highlight a few key moments, they would be the opportunities I’ve had to lead others and witness their potential unfold. Additionally, I’ve greatly valued the chance to build meaningful relationships within organisations, which has been incredibly rewarding both professionally and personally.
What are your thoughts on Chartered Membership? How do you feel about being a Chartered Member?
I believe that chartered membership is a fantastic achievement and plays a crucial role in enhancing the credibility of HR professionals. At times, we face the challenge of demonstrating our value, with the misconception that anyone with a certain level of experience can work in HR. However, I firmly believe this is not the case. Those of us who have made HR our career have developed a wealth of skills over years of dedication, learning, and practice.
As a chartered member, I feel a strong sense of pride and recognition for all the hard work and commitment that has gone into my career. This membership serves as an acknowledgment of that journey and the expertise that comes with it. It’s a great way to highlight the professionalism and dedication of those in the HR field.
What motivated you to work towards becoming a Chartered Member?
I’m someone who is always striving for achievement and setting goals that will support my continued growth in my career. My motivation to pursue chartered membership was sparked by the encouragement of a mentor from HRNZ, who recommended I work towards this recognition to affirm my level of practice. I am incredibly grateful for her guidance, mentorship, and belief in my abilities. Her support helped me realise that I could achieve this milestone, and it has been a rewarding journey to reach it.
What are your next steps in terms of your career now that you are a Chartered Member?
I will continue to develop and learn in the ever-evolving HR landscape. Holding this accreditation is an honour, and I am committed to living up to the standards required, if not more. As the year comes to a close, I look forward to further developing through new learnings and adapting to changes, ensuring I stay aligned with the modern working world, with a continued focus on people.
In time, I will also seek more senior positions to return to leadership roles and explore opportunities for greater influence within organisations.
