Stephanie Hodges APHRNZ

What led you to a career in HR/ the position that you are in currently?

I am a late bloomer with my career into HR, having had my children, experienced various jobs, completing a range of training – I had the epiphany to find a career that enhanced my strengths, included what I enjoy (developing people), offered me a challenge and incorporated continuous Learning and Development and filled my cup in regard to ‘helping people’. Welcome to HR!!!

After completing a Bachelor of Business Human Resources Management (part time while I worked full time and raised my children) I wanted to put all that hard mahi to use, but understood that to kick start my HR Career I would need to start at entry level, which was a huge step back for me.

2021- I landed a HR administrator role at Hauraki District Council and began my introduction to practical HR. (Way different from what you learn in books!!) I had a lot to learn!

2022 - I was promoted to HR Advisor People & Performance. I still have a lot to learn!

What do you love about working in HR?

HR covers all aspects of an ideal role for me offering: creativity, people connection, learning & development, & processes. No two days are the same and continuous improvement & continuous Learning is essential.

What is an achievement so far in your career that you are proud of?

Overcoming the barriers, the fear and the self-doubt to get to where I am today.

What are your thoughts on the Emerging Professional Member process?

I am a huge advocate for continuous learning – Going through the Emerging Professional process is leading by example making a commitment to personal improvement and development.

Do you plan to now work towards becoming a Chartered Member?

Yes – absolutely

What are your next steps in terms of your career?

I still have a lot to learn, personal development will be a huge focus for me, and change management will be an essential requirement for the Org going forward. I aim to concentrate on continuing to make Hauraki District Council a desirable place to mahi by offering the team forward thinking HR initiatives, developing career paths and succession planning, enhancing our cultural identity with tikanga Māori and te reo Māori, advocating for & supporting diversity inclusion and continuing to be proactive in developing our team to be the best they can be and supporting them through the changing environment we are facing.
