Rachel Rose CMHRNZ
What led you to a career in HR/ the position that you are in currently?
I began life as a Software Engineer, but soon realised my passion was working with people not code! After several years in the IT recruitment industry I got the opportunity to move into HR with ASB Bank and had 4 very happy years in that position before heading off on maternity leave and travel to overseas. After a period of studying Psychology and working in Mental Health I came back to HR in Queenstown, when organisations started seeing the need for a dedicated HR Leader in the management team. I have been in my current position as HR Manager for Southern Discoveries for just over 5 years, and whilst it has been very tough in the tourism industry, I feel very fortunate to work with a talented and dedicated leadership team. I work part time, which has enabled me to balance family and work needs.
What do you love about working in HR?
Seeing people thrive and grow, contributing to the success and sustainability of a business, advocating for optimum working conditions., and contributing to the development of high performing teams.
What are your thoughts on Chartered Membership? How do you feel about being a Chartered Member? I believe the Chartered Membership plays an important role in continuing to build the credibility of the HR profession in Aotearoa/New Zealand.
What motivated you to work towards becoming a Chartered Member?
I have two degrees, (BSocSc in Politics and a Masters in Psychology) but I do not have a formal HR qualification, so getting Chartered Status is a way for me to formalise my experience.
What are your next steps in terms of your career now that you are a Chartered Member?
I have picked up some consulting work with a local Social Services organisation. I am also keen to mentor up and coming professionals, so that we continue to grow our depth and breadth of HR talent. I have also recently rejoined the local HRNZ Branch Committee as my children become more independent.
