What led you to a career in HR/ the position that you are in currently?

My career isn’t exactly short so it has been a treat getting to where I am today. To be honest it comes down to fabulous people setting me up with the opportunity to take on the next challenge. HR as a career comes with highs and lows and everything in between. I’m lucky to have built high performing teams that have allowed me to play in the spaces that make positive impacts for businesses and the people in them.

What do you love about working in HR?

I love that no day is ever the same. I love that we dance in the grey as a profession to enable others to untangle complex issues with our support. HR has been thrown into the spotlight during the pandemic where we’ve been able to showcase the skills that are in ever increasing demand. So often these roles sit behind the scenes of the main production but now others have had a chance to see just how much work that takes and how much passion goes into what we do. The profession attracts those people who want to achieve to set others up for success…and we have fun doing exactly that.

Are there any specific highlights of your career that you wish to share?

The highlight of my career has been the fact that my skills have been able to transfer across any industry. I love learning about different sectors had consider myself extremely fortunate to have been in that position. I’ve worked in telecommunication, media, FMCG, construction and dairy. Being able to do that means you get to meet a wide cross section of people and learn something new every day. A great way to keep engaged in what I do.

What are your thoughts on Chartered Membership? How do you feel about being a Chartered Member?

Becoming a Chartered Member is a no brainer in my opinion. It is great to utilise a recognised CPD approach and know that it is consistent measurement of effort. I jumped into it when it was launched and love how it has been evolving under HRNZ’s guidance.

What motivated you to work towards becoming a Chartered Member?

There is something immensely satisfying about validating your learning in a recognised manner. The HRNZ framework provided that robustness for me and made it very easy to line up what I’d been doing in a visual presentation which required evidence. A good discipline to get into. I had spent years knowing that I was doing professional development work and had nowhere to put it. This allowed me to spring clean my learning and pop it all into the right place!

What steps have you taken in your career since becoming a Chartered Member?

Becoming a Chartered Member didn’t change anything specific for me but it did validate the personal efforts I have put in to stay informed, stay current and stay at the top of the game. Having that level of robust assessment is definitely meaningful.
