Director - Julia Stones & Associates Ltd
With over 25 years’ experience as a Director and business owner I would probably describe myself as a business person first and an HR professional second. Originally from the UK, I have been in NZ for 20 years, working across all industry sectors and role functions with subject matter expertise in HR. I was a voluntary Auckland branch president for four years, an HRNZ Board member for ten years and also served as the elected national Vice President and President. I was asked to be the Board sponsor to design and implement chartered membership and CPD for the HR profession in NZ. This was a watershed project that took two years to achieve, working with over 100 volunteers and academics in NZ across six workstreams.
In my day job I have a consultancy which focuses on the complete life cycle of a career. As a career coach I work with people across NZ at any stage of their career journey to help them find the right role using a unique career scoping tool I have designed called a Career Blueprint™. There is nothing like it in NZ and it helps people identify the right role where they can set themselves up for success and flourish. I also work as an executive search professional, specialising in the HR sector and I provide outplacement support when peoples’ roles are disestablished. The support I provide is practical, current and relevant as I am at the recruitment coalface every day!
I find great satisfaction in helping people identify their core motivational drivers which provides them with their own individual purpose. This helps them set themselves up with a higher probability of professional success, and just as importantly, where they will continue to flourish and be happy in a career they have actively chosen.
HR is a pivotal function in organisations that truly believe their people are their greatest asset. This is an exciting time of great change for the HR function globally so it’s also a real opportunity to develop a rewarding career across a broad spectrum of specialist roles in HR.
Understanding the business first is the critical success factor so as a mentor I help people focus on the business drivers from an HR perspective to understand the value they can add as an HR professional to support business performance.
