About
Steve offers our clients a lengthy practical business background, with an early successful track record in Marketing and Line Management before moving into the HR field as a consultant and completing a Diploma in Personnel Management and Employee Relations at Auckland University, following that up later with a Diploma in Adult Education and Training. Next came a Master’s degree in Human Resources and Organisational Development (MHROD), and recently a Master’s degree in Business Administration (MBA). Always expanding his knowledge base, he is currently working on a Diploma in Psychology
He has been designing and running training workshops for management through STA Training since 1992, along with acting as an external HR manager for clients through The People Effect since 1995.
He has been awarded three professional fellowships, being a Chartered Fellow of the Human Resources Institute of New Zealand (CFHRINZ), a Fellow of the Institute of Management and Leadership (FIML), and a Fellow of the NZ Association for Training & Development (FNZATD). He served on the HRINZ Board for 5 years, for the last two years serving as National Vice-President, and then spent a further year on the Auckland Branch team organising Professional Development Seminars for the membership. He served on the NZ Association for Training and Development (NZATD)’s National Executive Board and served two years as Auckland Branch President of NZATD as well as writing and producing the Networker magazine for the membership. He’s an active member on the Executive committee of the Employment Law Institute of NZ and a member of the NZ Institute of Directors and has facilitated Governance workshops for IoD such as Governance Essentials and Strategy Essentials.
Steve’s specialist areas are Performance Management in its widest sense, including organisational structure, job design, job descriptions, performance review systems, workplace training, performance counselling, disciplinary & termination, mediation and managing personal grievances. In order to carry out workplace investigations, Steve is also a licensed private investigator and member of the International Association of Workplace Investigators. He also owns and operates STA Training, providing interactive training workshops for managers and team leaders in the workplace, since 1990.
His Governance role over nearly 3 decades has included service on various boards, recent/current as an Independent Director on the board of AUT’s Student Movement for 4 years, and current Governance roles include The Employment Law Institute, Westforce Credit Union, Coastguard Lake Taupo, and Centre Stage Theatre. Steve also designs and facilitates Governance training workshops.
In his spare time, he writes regular columns and articles for professional journals such as ‘Human Resources’, ‘Training & Development’ and ‘NZ Professional Skipper’ and is himself a qualified charter skipper.
