I am currently the P&P Operations at RealNZ in Queenstown. I support the people operations across the group by overseeing the onboarding of our people and also our payroll function.
Previously I was the People and Capability General Manager at Ruapehu Alpine Lifts Ltd which operated both Whakapapa and Tūroa ski areas in the central north island. The People and Capability team were responsible for working alongside the leadership team to support employees through all aspects of their experience, from recruitment to engaging with teams during their employment. This was a seasonal business with a core team of approximately 80 that grew to 600 in the winter season so managing the recruitment and onboarding of teams in large volumes is something I’m used to.
My experience has come from being involved in the ski industry for about 20 years, starting in front line guest services through to administration and management. I’ve worked in the United States, Canada and Australia within the industry so have a perspective on the seasonal nature of the job and the challenges this can bring. I also have experience working in other tourism businesses that include Ziptrek Ecotours Queenstown, The Hermitage Hotel in Aoraki Mount Cook and NZSki.
I would say I’m an HR generalist with a focus on key areas that I’m most passionate about. My particular interests are in learning and development, employee engagement, leadership, and wellbeing. AT RAL, we have strong connections with our local region and one of the programmes I most love being a part of is our cadetship programme. It brings together supporting our community with employment opportunities, and the provision of training and qualifications in a way that benefits the business but also individuals and their whanau.
I hope that the mentoring partnership is mutually beneficial for both us and for me it’s about sharing the knowledge and experience I have to hopefully help someone else progress in their career. I also hope that I’ll personally benefit by hearing about someone else’s experience either in the same industry or somewhere completely different and that I’ll be able to use this to work with my own team and their development.
