Most employees will experience mental illness within their lifetime. Mental health concerns have become more prevalent in the workplace, with many employers unsure as to how to proceed when performance or productivity is affected.
Find out how to support staff by understanding mental illness and the impact at work.
Course overview
Unmanaged mental illness is now the leading cause of productivity loss worldwide – and impacts on sick leave and absenteeism.
This course is essential if you want to effectively manage mental health issues at work, improve productivity, and comply with your legal obligations.
Co-presented by a mental health expert and employment lawyer, this course introduces the topic of mental illness, with practical guidance on how to support staff at work.
Participants will find out how to manage common and complex issues relating to mental illness at work.
Detect early warning signs of mental illness, so you can assist staff who you suspect may have a mental illness. Discuss what to do if your staff member has a mental health crisis or is experiencing suicidal thoughts.
Consider the impact of unwell staff at work, including on sick leave and mental incapacity, and poor performance. Find out how to reduce the risk of mental illness and support struggling staff.
What to expect
Join author of ‘Being A True Hero: Understanding and Preventing Suicide in Your Community’ Michael Hempseed and employment lawyer Julia Shallcrass on this virtual half day course. We will explore case law and case studies to show you how to support staff with mental illness.
Attendees will receive a digital workbook including activities and can ask questions virtually during the live seminar. This course involves Q&A and activities for you to discuss in small groups.

Presenter Details

Julia Shallcrass

As founder of KiwiBoss, Julia Shallcrass is an employment lawyer with expertise in upskilling HR professionals to create high-performing workplaces. Julia is part of the KiwiBoss team that facilitates inhouse training throughout New Zealand. Julia presents practical and engaging virtual courses through HRNZ, Engineering NZ and Business South to help HR professionals and people managers comply with the law and improve team performance. She regularly presents webinars through CCH Learning. Through her 4.5-week online course “Leader’s Guide to Performance Management”, Julia develops team leaders and managers to improve team results. Julia is an employment columnist for the NZ Herald.

Michael Hempseed

Michael Hempseed is the author of Being A True Hero: Understanding and Preventing Suicide in Your Community. The book is being used by the New Zealand Police, Fire and Emergency NZ, GPs, Counsellors as well as many parents and teachers. He has trained everyone from army medics to social workers to health and safety companies. Michael gained an honours degree in Psychology from the University of Canterbury in 2008. In 2016 he spoke at TEDx.
