Mental Health Awareness Week (MHAW) begins next Monday 23 September.

The week is underpinned by Te Whare Tapa Whā, a well-known Māori model of health developed by Māori health advocate and researcher Sir Mason Durie.

Te Whare Tapa Whā helps people, and their workplaces, identify where they need extra support. It describes health as a ‘wharenui’ or meeting house with key walls. Learn more here.

The walls represent:

  • Wairua/spiritual wellbeing
  • Hinengaro/mental and emotional wellbeing
  • Tinana/physical wellbeing
  • Whānau/family and social wellbeing.
  • Connection with the whenua/land forms the foundation.
