In the last year, Arvida Group have moved from almost no technology to implementing and using high tech learning resources across 29 Aged Care facilities by 2,400 staff.
Teresa Seux is the Branch President for Auckland's HRINZ office and the General Manager of Human Resources at Arvida Group. She has experience in the establishment of new human resources functions at both the operational and strategic level. Recently, Teresa assisted Arvida Group in implementing new staff training initiatives in their aged care and retirement facilities.
Arvida Group asked themselves, how do we provide high quality, cost effective and timely training to meet increasing requirements for staff development within aged care? How can we achieve this across geographically diverse locations and different sized facilities? How can this work for staff members who have never touched a computer in their life? And how do we ensure the solution is sustainable over time for a 24/7 operation?
Arvida Group found the perfect solution was by the introduction of high quality, video based training and e-learning. This allowed staff to engage in individual development, while providing a sustainable solution to provide access to effective training across all locations and all shifts.
As a result of this digital-based training and learning, the skill levels of staff increased and their perception of their role has changed, realizing that their responsibility goes beyond daily care. The online access training has allowed for night staff to complete their training and upskill, where they were previously unable to attend group trainings.
"Staff no longer see health and safety as €˜boring', but are keen to participate, says Teresa. There has been significant and measurable decrease in H&S incident frequency by 43% and severity by 80%. Our staff can now readily access learning and manage their own development towards achieving NZ Certificates."
The implementation of e-learning and video based training has been a highly effective addition to staff training, leading to increase in staff satisfaction, morale and enthusiasm towards individual development, and most importantly, an increase in resident satisfaction.
"It's so handy€¦ I am able to do several sessions at different times. One of the challenges of staff training is having the night staff attend training sessions, being most if not all of them are done during the day. Now, the night staff are able to watch training videos during their shift."
