The event will be a panel discussion led by Jack Whittam (vice president of the HRNZ Canterbury branch committee), featuring Sarah Townsend, Melvyn Johns, Dr Chris Taua and Kelly Wealleans. The focus will on workplace bullying, harassment, and diversity.
Some of the key points that will be addressed in the panel discussion are:
- Cost to Businesses: Exploring the financial and reputational costs associated with bullying and harassment allegations, including real-life examples.
- Defining Bullying and Harassment: Discussing various forms of Bullying and Harassment.
- Mitigation and Response: Strategies to identify, address, and prevent workplace bullying and harassment.
- Impact on Employees: Examining the mental and physical effects of bullying and harassment, including long-term consequences on well-being and job performance.
- Proactive Strategies: Recommendations for individuals to minimize risk and address unwanted behavior assertively.
- Employer Measures: Comprehensive strategies from mental health professionals to foster a supportive and safe work environment.
- Cultural Sensitivity in NZ: Applying a culturally safe approach to understand and address bullying and harassment in Aotearoa/NZ, incorporating diverse cultural perspectives.

Sarah Townsend – Partner at Duncan Cotterill
Sarah specialises in employment and health and safety law, advising employers and senior executives from a wide range of industries. Sarah is a specialist employment and health and safety lawyer with 20 years’ experience working in employment law. Having worked both in-house and in private practice, she truly understands clients’ needs and priorities. Sarah advises employers and senior executives from a wide range of industries, including the education sector, agri-business, insurance and construction and enjoys working collaboratively with clients to provide solutions-focused advice.
Melvyn Johns - MASW, B.A. (Hons), Cert. Supervision, Cert. AOD Counselling, RSW
Mel has over 25 years’ experience working in multiple mental health and addiction settings in Aotearoa New Zealand and the UK. He has held a number of diverse roles - in residential, community, custodial, detox and crisis services - within statutory, voluntary, culturally specific and the commercial sector. In addition to clinical practice, he has experience in governance, leadership, tertiary education, project management and supervision. His passion is to develop and deliver client-centered and recovery-focused services, built on a foundation of social justice values. He has facilitated a range of workshops for MHERC over several years. Mel currently works in private practice and contracts to a number of local, national and multinational organisations, working with a broad and diverse client base.
Dr Chris Taua - PhD, RN, BN, MN(Distinction), PGC(MH), CAdTch, FNZCMHN
Chris Taua is an educational specialist deeply committed to mental health, cultural safety, and disability advocacy. Drawing from her extensive experience as an experienced mental health nurse, she brings a wealth of practical and research informed insight to her teaching and research pursuits. Her doctoral studies were centered on enhancing nursing care for individuals contending with intellectual and developmental disabilities alongside mental health challenges, a journey that earned her recognition with a prestigious Fulbright award, where she presented her work at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. As the Director of her own organisation [Pumahara Consultants] specialising in professional development, workplace consultancy and professional supervision, Chris is unwavering in her dedication to supporting staff, teams and services as they endeavour to assist individuals with multifaceted health and social needs. Her teaching portfolio spans vital topics including mental health, disability, de-escalation techniques, safe practice, effective communication, the significance of maintaining safe boundaries and culturally sensitive approaches. Chris supports a team of Associates who offer a varied range of topics as well. Through her holistic approach to teaching and learning, Chris aims to empower professionals and support staff with the knowledge and skills necessary to navigate the complexities of caregiving in an inclusive manner. Beyond her organisational commitments, Chris remains actively engaged in academia, contributing as a sessional lecturer at various universities in Aotearoa and Australia. Additionally, she serves as an Accredited Mental Health First Aid Aotearoa Instructor, furthering her impact in mental health education and support initiatives
Kelly Wealleans - Head of People, Safety & Compliance at Sorted Logistics
Kelly is passionate about promoting a culture of respect and dignity and promoting an open and supportive workplace for the workers at Sorted Logistics. Having 10+ years in HR she recognised the need for different tools and support required for a diverse workforce. Having worked in Australia and New Zealand supporting and implementing initiatives for mental health programs in the workplace that have supported diverse groups such as indigenous social and emotional wellbeing, Pacific Groups Support Services, and much more. She is also the HRNZ Branch president for Canterbury and as a volunteer her committee is passionate about bringing events to the Canterbury region that support their members and keeping their network connected to share experiences.
